  Day Three   Monarch in Innsbruck

Visit Intended Tomb of Maximilian I, a masterwork of German Renaissance sculpture. Maximilian wished to be buried here (He was finally buried in the Royal Crypt in Vienna and created a tomb that was to be "the wonder of the whole country." Next, we will visit the Hofkirche (Royal Church). We will also visit the Hofburg (royal palace), finished in 1776, which gives a glimpse into the Baroque civil architecture.

The other Austrian monarch particularly to favor Innsbruck was Marie Theresa (18th c.). In Innsbruck, we will visit the Great Triumphal column dedicated to her and the Triumphal Arch she built to commemorate the marriage of her son Leopold.

After lunch we will look briefly at the city's Olympic Village and then take the Tramway to the Mountains above Innsbruck to view the spectacular scenery of the Tyrol, some of the most beautiful mountain views in the world.

Evening concert performance.

  Day Four   Salzburg

Depart in the morning for Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace and a city that is thought to be the most beautiful in the Tyrol. Salzburg is dominated by the majestic cliffs that rise above the river Salzach and are topped by the great fortress Hohensalzburg.

Tour St. Peter's Cathedral, the great Renaissance church with its 350 foot nave, commissioned by Archbishop Marcus Sittcus from court architect Santino Solari. Shopping in the Alter Markt, the city's original medieval market street, and along the Getreidegasse, which now contains some of Salzburg's finest shops adorned with wrought-iron signs.

Visit the Mozart Birthplace, a typical old Salzburg burgher's house where he was born on January 27, 1756. Next we will visit Mozart's residence and living quarters where he lived from 1773 until 1780. A museum was installed on the first floor of the former living quarters, documenting the history of the building and the life of the Mozart Family.

Attend a private Mozart concert at the Schloss Leopoldskron, an 18th century palace on a lake where Mozart and his father both played.

  Day Five   Salzburg and Countryside

Depending on our ambition, we will either climb or take the tram to the medieval fortress of Hohensalzburg. We will tour the fortress including the Golden Room, torture chamber, and castle museum.

Then, board the bus for an afternoon of recreation in the Tyrol and a chance to tour the countryside. We will visit the small town of Mondsee (Moon Lake). There will be a boat excursion on the lake. We will visit the Baroque church which was used as the set for Maria's wedding in The Sound of Music movie.

In the evening, attend a performance of Salzburg's world-famous Marionette Theater where extraordinary puppets perform the greatest operas in the Mirabell Mansion with its Rococo ceilings.
