Venture across the
Queensborough Bridge into Long Island City, Queens for the morning. Visit the
Isamu Noguchi Museum. A former warehouse, this museum now displays over
300 of Noguchi's sculptural forms, created over the past five decades. Nearby
is Socrates Sculpture Park, a 4 1/2 acre waterfront park that recently
opened with large-scale outdoor sculptures by many New York artists including
Mark di Suvero. Also visit P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, which
recently merged with the Museum of Modern Art, and includes 5 floors and 125,000
square feet of exhibition space, one of the largest contemporary art exhibition
spaces in the world. A special treat in Queens, enjoy a private tour of a
bronze foundry and witness a pouring. The impressive clientele includes
Jasper Johns, Francesco Clemente, Robert Indiana, Cy Twombly and Louise Nevelson.

With an art historian
and public art specialist, venture to Battery Park City, where we will
tour public art commissions. Our guide will discuss outdoor installations -
carefully sited along the esplanade and in urban gardens and plazas - by such
artists as Siah Armajani, Richard Artschwager, Scott
Burton, R.M. Fischer, Mary Miss, Ned Smyth, and Tom
Otterness. Additional sites, such as a Louise Nevelson park, and sky
lobbies featuring large-scale art commissions can be included. Learn more about
the delicate process of placing public art works, and the organizations involved
in making it a success..
